In Najjera, Uganda, Dr. Gudla Naiga Bassaza is transforming young lives through agriculture. Since 2009, Guide Leisure Farm has trained hundreds of youth to become successful agripreneurs, offering a practical solution to unemployment while building the next generation of farmers.
From Crisis to Opportunity
Dr. Bassaza’s journey into agriculture was born from a troubling observation that many Ugandan communities face: unemployment was pushing too many young people toward crime, dependency, and hopelessness. As she watched talented youth struggle to find opportunities, she recognized something crucial: agriculture offered something unique in Uganda’s economic landscape. Unlike many industries that require capital, connections, or specialized credentials, agriculture has virtually no barriers to entry. Any motivated young person, regardless of their background or resources, could potentially build a successful agricultural business.
This realization sparked what would become Gudie Leisure Farm, but Dr. Bassaza’s vision extended far beyond simply encouraging young people to farm. She understood that without proper training, support systems, and market connections, enthusiasm alone wouldn’t translate into sustainable businesses. What started as a simple idea evolved into something far more comprehensive: the Gudie Incubation Center, a full-service training facility that equips young people with everything they need to succeed in agricultural business?
A Comprehensive Training Ecosystem
What sets Gudie Leisure Farm apart from traditional agricultural training programs is its holistic approach. Rather than teaching farming in isolation, the center provides specialized training across the entire white meat value chain, ensuring graduates understand not just production, but the complete business ecosystem.
The Feed Production Campus teaches young farmers how to create low-cost, high-quality feed using locally available materials. This knowledge is transformative because feed represents one of the largest operating costs in livestock farming. By learning to produce their own feed, young entrepreneurs gain control over their costs and improve their profit margins significantly.
The White Meat Production Campus focuses on raising chickens, fish, rabbits, and pork. Here, trainees learn the practical skills of animal husbandry, from managing breeding cycles to preventing disease, ensuring optimal growth rates, and maintaining healthy stock. The hands-on training means graduates leave with real experience, not just theoretical knowledge.
Understanding that production means nothing without sales, the Marketing and Distribution program connects producers with buyers and teaches the specialized skills needed for white meat logistics. Trainees learn cold chain management, the critical process of maintaining proper temperatures during transportation to preserve meat quality and ensure food safety. This specialized knowledge opens doors to higher-value markets that demand quality and reliability.
The Value Addition training transforms raw products into market-ready goods. Youth Entrepreneur Vendors learn to prepare, grill, roast, and package various meat products, significantly increasing their profit margins. A whole chicken might sell for one price, but that same chicken grilled and portioned can command much more, especially in urban markets and near universities where convenience and ready-to-eat options are highly valued.
Finally, Quality Assurance training ensures that every graduate understands food safety, hygiene standards, and quality control. This knowledge protects both their business reputation and customer health, building trust that translates into loyal customers and sustainable income.
Real Impact
The real impact of Goody Leisure Farm shines through in the stories of its graduates.
Isaac George from Mukono District arrived with basic knowledge from helping his father manage a fish pond. Through the incubation program, he gained skills that went far beyond what he learned at home. Now he can independently manage his father’s operation, introduce innovations, and even train others. The confidence and expertise he gained have made him a valuable asset to his family’s farming business.
Jennifer Kyarikunda from Kabale District joined the program with entrepreneurial ambitions. In just three weeks of intensive training, she mastered modern cooking techniques, learned to prepare diverse meat dishes from chicken to rabbit, and developed a solid business plan. Living near Kabale University, she’s identified her target market, university students, and is ready to launch her own food vending business selling grilled meats and chips omelets.
These stories represent just two of the hundreds of young people who have passed through Gudie Leisure Farm, each leaving with skills, confidence, and a clear path to economic independence.
The program prioritizes inclusion: 70% of participants are women, 30% are refugees, and 90% come from rural areas. The farm targets youth aged 18-35, training them to become community leaders
Solving the Complete Puzzle
What makes Gudie Leisure Farm truly unique is how comprehensively it addresses farming challenges. Many agricultural programs teach production skills but leave graduates struggling with the business realities of farming. Gudie solves the complete puzzle.
Stable Input Supply ensures consistent access to quality feed, vaccines, and medicines at stable prices. By buying in bulk and maintaining inventory, the farm protects its graduates from price volatility and supply disruptions that can devastate small farmers.
• Guaranteed Market Access means every graduate joins an established value chain with reliable buyers. They’re not left to struggle finding customers; the connections are built in.
• Financial Support recognizes that young people often lack startup capital. Through a unique credit system, youth can access products and pay only after making sales, removing the financial barrier that stops many entrepreneurs before they start.
• Knowledge Transfer partnerships with research institutions deliver cutting-edge agricultural techniques in accessible formats, ensuring graduates benefit from the latest innovations in farming science.
Why White Meat
The strategic focus on white meat isn’t accidental; it’s brilliant. Chickens, fish, rabbits, and pork require minimal space compared to cattle or large-scale crop farming. They provide quick returns, with chickens ready to sell in just six weeks, allowing farmers to repay loans and reinvest rapidly. They meet growing middle-class demand for protein in Uganda’s expanding urban markets.
For young people with limited land and capital, white meat represents the perfect entry point into profitable farming. You don’t need hectares of land; a small backyard or even a balcony can become a productive farm with the right techniques.
Innovation and Hard Lessons
Dr. Bassaza brings unique qualifications to agricultural training. Holding a doctorate in ICT and a master’s in education, she understands both technology and how people learn. The farm teaches vertical farming and space-efficient methods, proving that even the smallest spaces can generate income.
Her most powerful lesson came through failure. After losing 30,000 birds to poor feed quality, the farm fundamentally changed its approach. Now they produce their own feed and test every ingredient. This devastating experience taught a crucial truth: in agriculture, consistency is everything. Missing just two days of feeding can destroy months of careful investment.
A Call to Transform Lives
Dr. Bassaza’s message to Uganda’s youth is both challenging and inspiring: “If you are Ugandan, don’t suffer in poverty. We have everything we need in our country. Supplying food is big business.”
Her practical advice is grounded in years of experience: choose a specific niche rather than trying to do everything, research thoroughly before investing, understand your supply sources and sales channels completely, and invest wisely in operations that require consistent attention. Agriculture isn’t a fallback option for those who couldn’t find “real” work; it’s a viable, profitable career that can transform lives. Gudie Leisure Farm stands as living proof of this truth, demonstrating that with the right training, support, and business model, young people can turn agriculture into opportunity, prosperity, and hope for the future.
