As AAN has previously documented in its coverage of disciplined beef farming in Uganda, the strategic selection of superior genetics is one of the most powerful decisions a livestock farmer can make.

A History of the Ankole Breed in South Africa
Ankole cattle were first introduced to South Africa in 2003 through an embryo transfer programme spearheaded by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Dr. Morné de la Rey. President Ramaphosa fell in love with them during a visit to President Museveni‘s farm in Kisozi, Uganda during a visit and subsequently acquired a nucleus herd.
Because disease regulations prevented the direct importation of live animals from Uganda, the cattle were moved to Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, where embryos were collected and transferred to South Africa. The breed then underwent extensive performance testing in accordance with the Animal Improvement Act.
Following years of evaluation and proven performance, Ankole cattle were officially recognized as an approved breed in South Africa in May 2019, marking a significant milestone in the breed’s expansion beyond East Africa.

A Platform for Africa’s Most Iconic Cattle Breed
The Ankole Auction has evolved significantly since its first edition. What began as a livestock sale has consequently transformed into a comprehensive platform for celebrating the economic, cultural, and genetic significance of one of Africa’s most iconic breeds.
Known for their striking appearance, efficient grazing ability, and natural resistance to tropical diseases, Ankole cattle are increasingly recognised by commercial and stud breeders alike as a breed with genuine long-term value. Moreover, the auction gives breeders from across the continent a structured, high-profile opportunity to access animals with documented bloodlines and proven performance traits that can meaningfully improve the genetic quality of their herds.
Bona Bona Livestock: Setting the Standard in Ankole Genetics

Why Ankole Genetics Are Attracting Growing Investment
The livestock sector remains one of the most critical pillars of agricultural development across Africa. Consequently, the strategic importance of investing in superior genetics is becoming more widely understood among both commercial producers and smallholder farmers seeking to improve herd productivity, resilience, and market value.
Ankole cattle are particularly well-suited to the realities of African livestock farming. They are heat-tolerant, efficient converters of low-quality pasture, and naturally adapted to the environmental pressures that challenge many other breeds. Additionally, their unique physical characteristics and cultural significance make them highly desirable among buyers seeking both production performance and heritage value.
Networking, Knowledge, and Opportunity
Beyond the sale of animals, the 6th Annual Ankole Auction, serves as a powerful networking and knowledge-sharing platform for everyone in the livestock value chain. Industry experts, commercial breeders, agricultural entrepreneurs, and livestock investors use the occasion to exchange ideas, build partnerships, and explore the emerging opportunities shaping the future of cattle farming across Africa.
Meanwhile, growing interest from buyers in new geographic markets reflects the breed’s expanding commercial appeal. Accordingly, participants from countries where Ankole cattle were previously little known are now actively seeking premium genetics, driven by the breed’s proven ability to perform across a wide range of climatic and production environments. The Ankole Auction additionally represents a tangible and immediate opportunity to put capital to work in one of Africa’s most promising livestock categories.
